It's as fair a fight as we've seen.Part of the reason this is an unusual situation lies with the fact that Ryzen-powered laptops, in general, are thin on the ground. All configurations were tested with an RTX 2080 Ti, 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL14 memory and a Corsair Hydro H150i Pro 360mm AIO liquid cooler.AES encryption performance in SiSoftware is also very similar to that of the 8700K as the 10600K provided a throughput of 13 GB/s, making it 35% slower than the 3700X.That’s going to do it for the application benchmarks, time to check out power consumption. Our performance results below come from a Ryzen 5 model, a Ryzen 7 model, and a Core i7 model, all of which we tested in late 2019. We tested three such scenarios: encoding a video using the open-source Handbrake app, applying a series of filters to an image in Adobe Photoshop, and rendering a single 3D image in the Maxon 4D-based Cinebench benchmark tool.Performance is only one of many factors to consider, of course, and it's also important to remember that the tests above pertain only to the Surface Laptop 3. That in my opinion makes it Intel’s best value high-end gaming CPU.© 2020 TechSpot, Inc. All Rights Reserved. The most unexpected result so far, the 10600K was 10% faster than the 8700K in Adobe Photoshop. We use both of these demanding titles to test gaming laptops, and although 30fps is acceptable, 60fps or greater represents a more enjoyable experience.© 1996-2020 Ziff Davis, LLC. Our benchmark tests below show that the Intel-powered CPU is better in some scenarios, especially performance on basic tasks like web browsing. With identical core counts and nearly identical boost clock speeds, all of the laptops should theoretically perform within a few points on this test. Which one performs better? You don't need a special business relationship with Microsoft to buy an Intel-based Surface Laptop 3 15-incher, however. Basically we’re increasing the all-core clock frequency from 4.5 GHz to 4.8 GHz.Jumping over to the Gears Tactics we see that at 1080p, using an RTX 2080 Ti, the 10600K is able to match the 10700K, placing it within 1-2fps of the 10900K. Based on a next-gen Zen 2 architecture, Ryzen … First, a Bit of Chip Backgrounder. Part of the reason this is an unusual situation lies with the fact … Then finally the 5.1 GHz overclock boosted the score right up to 533 pts, a 7% jump in performance.Out of the box, the 10600K will clock up to 4.8 GHz and that’s going to make it pretty snappy in games. That margin is reduced to just 3% at 1440p. A decent performance boost that gets the 10600K in range of the 10700K and 10900K -- not quite the same level, but certainly comparable performance.Regardless of your decision, as of writing it’s simply not possible to purchase the Core i5-10600K. Still, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is expensive enough that it should be able to handle some less-demanding creative workflows with reasonable speed. The small but significant difference suggests that if you're a power user—you tend to open dozens of browser tabs at once, perhaps—you might be better off choosing the Intel version. Intel's Iris Plus is an impressive integrated GPU, but so is the custom Radeon GPU with its increased number of graphics compute units. With Cinebench, Intel recorded a small but decisive victory... The Handbrake test is very different. That made it 4% faster than the 8700K and 10% faster than the 3700X, so a very solid result here for the new 6-core Intel processor.Moving on to 7-zip, the 10600K again matched the 8700K in decompression performance, making it 20% slower than the 3600 and almost 40% slower than the 3700X.Next up we have Shadow of the Tomb Raider and here the 10600K was up to 6% faster than the 8700K and that meant while it was 2% faster than the 3700X, it was 5% slower than the 10700K when comparing the average frame rate and 11% slower when comparing 1% low data. Finally we have Shadow of the Tomb Raider where we see a 6% boost in 1% low performance with a few extra frames on average.
As a result the 10600K was just a few frames slower than the 10700K and 10900K, while it beat the 3700X by a 5% margin. Those margins change slightly at 1440p, here the 10600K was 8% faster than the 3700X and 3600, while it was only 6% behind the 10700K and 10900K.On the other hand, the Core i5-10600K has the potential to deliver 10700K and 10900K-like performance at an even cheaper price point.
