I went during early spring, after one of the best winter snowfalls in a long time. Always check with area rangers to see if kayaking a particular waterway is feasible at that time of year.A boat launch adjacent to the town of Mormon Lake was built many years ago when the area received more rain, but the launch point is quite far away from the water nowadays. It is a beautiful sky blue lake surrounded by Ponderosa Pines and meadows with views of the San Francisco Peaks. While that might sound like something you should stay out of, it’s actually a pretty amazing success story; the area around the lake has been cleaned up and revegetated. Almost immediately following that is a class IV rapid, Verde Falls, which drops over an eight-foot waterfall.
