Self-surgery is the act of performing a surgical procedure on oneself. And while Paul Bettany looks nothing like the Maturin described in the books, I feel like he did an excellent job of capturing the character and all his intricacies, even if the movie didn’t get to plumb his depths the way the books do. It is hinted that this Beam is personified in the character of Stephen King. The camaraderie between them is evident: keen ears and attentiveness prevail in the dark and dingy cabin. The character certainly concentrated many of the author’s concerns and interests into a dynamic and indelibly memorable personality.
So the tension between the demands of war and the pursuit of science is perhaps not resolved, but it is at least brought to a detente through the friendship of the unlikely pair of protagonists.Maturin’s Irish lineage and his Catholic religion are, like his spying, mostly relegated to the fringes of the characterization in the film.
